The Necessity of Scepticism
Scepticism is a necessity to any proper inquiry about the Universe. Accepting claims without supporting evidence amounts to intellectual bankruptcy. In the context of religion, this bankruptcy is referred to as "faith".
But scepticism is not limited to religion, it applies universally. In fact, it is one of the most vital aspects of the scientific method: to assume the negative until the positive can be demonstrated.
This is what scepticism is. It is an attempt to be thorough and to avoid inconsistencies when investigating the Universe.
It is also important to note what scepticism is not. This arises from some misconceptions regarding the sceptical position.
Being a sceptic does not entail being stubborn or close minded. Not accepting a proposition until it can be supported with empirical observations is not close mindedness, it is merely being thorough and reliable.
Open mindedness and scepticism are definitely compatable. Many sceptics are open minded people but are unable to accept claims without evidence. This approach is perfectly rational and underlines the necessity of scepticism.
