Classic Rock Noir: Born To Run

The Untold Story: I wanted to expand a bit from my first Rock Noir video by building a larger story around a song’s lyrics. It was an idea I liked quite a bit. Ultimately, one can interpret the story and read into it (or take from it) whatever they desire. Certainly, I do not think I told the story as well as I would have liked and a part of the story was not even told in the video (Hehe, I’m a dumbass, I guess) as overall I desired to tell something of a moral and sentimental tale. The Giggler meets up with some old friends who invite him to play poker. What is not told is that these friends (Frankie, Johnny and the others) are all going through difficult financial times and/or are making their way through some adversity. Wendy enters the scene. She is a love from the Giggler’s past. She has returned in the hope of rekindling the relationship. The song “Born to Run” is his speech to her. The Springsteen song is a man’s plea to his love that they run away together. I think we tend to supply the song with an ending whereby they do run away together to find happiness in each other’s arms. The Giggler still loves Wendy and he expresses the desires contained in the song. However, I tried to give it a different rendering as while he has expressed his ardent desires to be with her, he decides that now is not the time. Hence, they are destined to run but not together. They would be together… some day. I wanted to tie the poker game in with the lyrical story. In both instances, the Giggler sacrificed that others could benefit. In the Poker game, the Giggler had an unbeatable Royal Flush but folded in the end. The purposeful act was so that his friends (or at least one of them) could benefit from the money as they were in need. The Giggler “folded” on acting upon his desire to be with Wendy because, just as he knew in the Poker game that which was his hand, he knew intuitively that he could not give Wendy the life he desired for her at that point in time. Well, I hope that gives you some perspective on how I wanted this video to be. Of course, I think I failed in telling the story exactly as I desired. I do love the ending though when Frankie shows The Giggler’s hand and Born to Run kicks in. It’s a groovy moment, man. In the end this video is supposed to be about a sacrificing love for friends or a flame. Such a story is not without my own personal knowledge and experience as many, many, MANY years ago I ended a relationship because it was causing her grades to suffer. She had ventured through much to get to that point and goal and I would not be the one to jeapardize her dreams, future or goal. She went on to achieve the goals she stated to me when we first met. I was and will ever be proud of her…wherever she may be.
