Journey

I wrote this when I was 15 years old, it was a very creative period for me.

Journey

Our journey had ended
Before the breast of cygnas
Spirit hearth
With its starlight
Magical in array of turquoise
This, where I stood
Was final
Day had come
Awoke amid the diamond
Parlay of sequence
And rain
Where, as we have hid
Within our evil and decay
These prophets have fornicated
Within their zealous womb –
Their words have deceived the sweet flesh
The markets have sold their tongues
Denial — without the abyss
In dark comphort and seclusion
We have revealed the answer
Edge of our swords have run deep
This petition of sorrow
I have cast unto the sea verily
For this is the blood of our ancient father
Whose tears are blind to our cries
Mute and without remorse
I have swallowed the whip of insolence
When upon this rock
I have always enjoyed its brilliance
My eyes now, shallow within my skull
Now revealed — is the true purpose of this discovery.

REBELLION

REBELLION

AM I JUST A FILTHY RAG?
DO I REALLY OFFEND THE MOST HIGH?
HOW DOES MY STENCH REACH HIM?
VIA A LADDER I CANNOT SEE?

AM I AS WICKED AS YOU?
IS MY SOUL LURID LIKE YOURS?
THIS FETOR HAS REACHED YOUR KINGDOM
IT’S BLEMISH WILL KISS YOUR LIPS

MY ODE TO YOUR REBELLION
IS RICKETY AT BEST
MY RECOMPENSE MIGHT SETTLE
THIS SMALL PENALTY I SEEK

AM I A WEALTH OF MOCKERY?
A CORRUGATION — SMOLDERING IN A PIT?
AM I SEDIMENT IN YOUR GRAVEYARD?
A MISFIT AND QUIRK OF REASON?

YOUR GRACE HAS DEEMED ME ODIOUS
THIS CAULDRON WHICH FATHOMS DEEP
YOUR WORDS DID NOT CREATE
THE HARVEST I SEEK

I AM YOUR PREDATOR
IN RAPT BLISS
RAW, WITHIN THIS ARROYO
CHAFED AND GAUNT I SEE

AM I THE ORACLE OF A MAN?
IS YOUR SOUL AS RAUCOUS AS MINE?
IN THIS FUROR I BUT CALL A MURMUR
IN ENMITY I WILL SLEEP

Book Review: "The Nature of Things" by Lucretius

Poem by Roman philosopher-poet Lucretius (died c.50BC), a follower of the Greek philosopher Epicurus.

“Whatever falls through water or thin air, the rate/
Of speed at which it falls must be related to its weight/
Because the substance of water and the nature of thin air/
Do not resist all objects equally, but give way faster/
To heavier objects, overcome, while on the other hand/
Empty void cannot at any part or time withstand/
Any object, but it must continually heed/
Its nature and give way, so all things fall at equal speed,/
Even though of differing weights, through the still void”
Book II lines 230-239

Poem: After Reading Ecclesiastes 3:19-21 Again

Yep, a poem I wrote recently.

The reason Nature seems to test mankind
With cold and stone-hard stares, and unmoved mind,
Is just to make him see what’s plainly true:
He’s like an animal, nay, is one too.
You don’t believe me? Why then, let’s just think.
As man is born, so is the beast, then blink
Your eyes, and both have died, caught in some snare,
Or else disfigured far beyond repair
So soon thereafter breathe the final breath,
Dispatched to earth, the source of life and death.
So man has no advantage o’er his brother,
As wretched death claims one, he claims the other.

Did I say “wretched”? Actually, it’s worse.
The brilliant mind of man can seem a curse;
Illumination, yes, but searing heat,
So awestruck man performs a wondrous feat:
He stoops, then squints, and fumbles in the gloom,
So hastening through his misery his doom.
But animals, whose brains are dim, live thus:
They flit, they drink, they eat: no sordid fuss.
A man of reason can’t conceal his mirth:
Poor man is heaven-bound, yet beast to earth!?
Kind Nature’s given beasts to simple pleasures.

If only man would use his mind: it measures
Out every thing that he could ever need.
They are: to flit, to drink, to love, to feed.
This recognition of kind Nature’s goal
Produces gladness, elevates man’s soul;
The joy and pleasure transcend mortal frame:
This soaring spirit ills can never tame.
